The Awesome Foundation is a new philanthropic organization seeking to promote awesomeness.
“Awesomeness is more the product of a creator’s passion than the prospect of audience or profit. Awesome creations are novel and non-obvious, evoking surprise and delight. Invariably, something about them perfectly reflects the essence of the medium, moment, or method of creation. Awesomeness challenges and inspires.”
They’re giving away thousands of dollars a month to awesome projects.
Convincing people to make time to come out to a contemporary art exhibition has a couple of tracts:
This artist is significant.
This is a rare opportunity to see this artist’s work.
This artist influences other artists.
These “one-liners” fit easily into ad copy, Twitter, press release headlines, and elevator speeches. The problem is, that they don’t speak to an audience that, normally, doesn’t make time to culture themselves beyond a new film or the new restaurant in their city.
There’s an argument for challenging, segmented, explanatory bits. Not: “this is why you should care,” instead: “this is what this art does.”
Comfest and Independence (but not Independent’s) Day are done and now we enter into the dog days of summer. Ugh.

Just got a call from the lovely Leilani (bartender at Park Street Tavern and girlfriend to my brother) that we’ll be giving away a pair of Offspring tickets at trivia tomorrow.
For the past couple of weeks I’ve found myself discussing the ins and outs of Twitter and other social media stuff more and more. I’m getting really sick of it.
